The Power Boats Our launch is used mainly for transportation of large numbers of people to and from the many and varied activities we take part in around the Otago harbour. It is also used to give senior cadets the chance to refine the power vesel skills the have learned and to give them the feel of handling a large, not terribly nimble, craft.
Our kiwi crafts main role is as a rescue craft for our other boats just in case something goes wrong. It allows us to move quickly around the harbour. It is also a rescue craft for the greater marine community when the need arises. In the summer on warmer Sundays it is often user to tow a varity of biscuits and skis around.
The parkercraft is what the senior rates use to get their first experience in a small, fast, nimble powerboat. It is often used as a rescue boat and for ferrying people short distances. It is a bit of a go between. |

Our Sailing and other boats The Whaler this is only used for sailing with expirienced crews because of its high speed, lack of manouverability and its technicalities. It is very difficult to row unless there is a big crew( it weighs more than a ton). A crusie boat to sail longer distances. The Crown The grp crown is our main sailing boat as it is realitivly modern and goes well. It is also very easy to rig, it is a competitive race boat and a gentle boat to learn to sail on. It is of little use for rowing as the pressure from the oars tends to flex the grp, reducing the power that can be used from the oars. The 17' cutters these were originally designed for the scout movement as a simple easy to use and transport training boat. The naval students were require to build one as part of one of the courses that were taught. Because of this there were a lage number produced, each different and numbered. These are used for sailing although not as often as the crown as they are low performance, take longer to rig and are clumbersome to move on land. They are used for rowing a lot as they dont flex and carry way well. Some of our senior crews(6 peole, 4 rowing, one helm, and one bowsperson) have been known to get these 900Kg beasts on a plane in a swell!! This is why we are the NZSCC champs at rowing. The Optimists these are used for fun days more than anything else but are also used to give cadets experience in a single handed boat. Canoes just for fun, and sometimes water safety.
