What do YOU think of it

What you learn

The Sea cadet corps is the ideal choice for youths seeking a challenge in life with many varied activities based on the RNZN and the defence force. You will learn; self discipline, leadership, teamwork, water safety, maritime skills, weapons training, and all manner of boat work skills and all the skills required by the basic navy. It must stressed that we are not a recruiting service for the armed forces though cadets who have progressed to the armed forces have found the skills they learned at sea cadets helpful in their chosen career.

Put those skills to the test

Sea cadets don't just learn the skills, they get to put them into practise. The RNZN regularly has berths available on their ships for cadets and they get the chance to really experience life at sea in New Zealand's navy. Sea cadets are adopted as part of the ships crew and are expected to perform all the tasks an ordinary seaman of the RNZN would have to do. Cadets are selected for this experience at the discresion of the units commanding officer and their performance at a unit level greatly influences their priority.

Travel Aotearoa (New Zealand)

When Cadets reach the rank of Able cadet class three they become elegable for the Leading Cadets course held at HMNZS Tamaki in Devonport, Auckland. This course is free as is all the transport to the base. Air transport is provided to cadets by the RNZAF air movements. Cadets also travel to HMNZS Tamaki for the Petty Officers promotion course and Whangaparoa Military Camp for the Sea Cadet Corps Course.
In addition to this there are many other camps and regattas that The individual Units organise that cadets can attend, usually at a small charge to the cadets to help cover costs incurrered to the Unit.
